Regency Ballroom, San Francisco 9.14.2010

My first kid-free overnight was spent at the Regency Ballroom,a former Masonic Hall and an amazingly vast, pristine and varied piece of architecture. Each floor completely different and gorgeous in it's own way. I saw Sleep play on the Ballroom floor and was blown away all over again.

A New Year

I resolve to choose my words more carefully and get out of the house more. My tendency is to hide out in my house for days at a time, and not just when the weather is bad. I also have a tendency to say more than is necessary and/or helpful. In 2010 I will be doing more getting out and shutting up.

I'm celebrating my birthday this year by being in a show at SFMOMA Artist's Gallery, Saturday,December 12. I'll be showing off and selling all our new Evo Noche gear, along with lots of other great artists and designers like Sita Rupe Paintings and Good On Paper hand-printed stationary. 12' X 6', Archival is made from typed journal entries that have been twisted, punctured, bound and marked. Archival paper, thread, safety pins, staples, nylon cord and ink.

The Imposition

The Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek was given a diseased, 300 year old oak tree. The fallen tree was cut into pieces and given to artists who transformed the wood into sculpture for the show "Big Tree Project"."The Imposition" was included in the show. Working with wood was a departure for me, usually the materials I work with are soft and flexible but by drilling holes and threading them with zip-ties, I gave a nod to my fascination with sewing.

HCDC

"HCDC" was the first piece I made after moving out of Oakland and into Sonoma County's Wine Country. I was grappling with what it meant to relocate for the sake of my family, giving up a social life and enormous work space for safety and a better school district.The materials in this piece represent both places and the circumstances that led from one to the other.

NYC

In keeping with my habit of doing everything the hard way and hauling large amounts of baggage to far places, I took my 18 month old son to NYC last month. We had a great time; saw 12 different friends from Santa Cruz, attended an amazing wedding, went to a bunch of kid parks and ate a cupcake a day on the average. We managed to sneak in a little art viewing too, most notably a Takashi Murakami mural and drawings by Christo, as well as the new show at the incredible gallery Ricco Maresca, which was showing drawings by Toc Fetch and figurines by Trisha Cline.

My squirmy, little trooper, mugging for the camera and sporting the new hammer and eyeglasses tees we just made available at Who's Your Betty in Oakland and Sprout in Healdsburg. I drew these glasses from my mom's and my collections of our vintage eyeglasses, while I was pregnant with my son.

Chronicle 2003

Chronicle started as a collection of plastic newspaper bags from daily service to The San Francisco Chronicle. My 70 year old cousin, Leta had noticed my love of sewing plastic bags and saved me about a years worth of them.

I brought the washed and dried yellow bags down to Creative Growth in Oakland, an incredible art center for developmentally disabled adults. Some of my favorite art of all time was made by artists there and I was honored to have the opportunity to work with three amazing artists on this piece; Dinah Schapiro, Vera Hollins and Judith Scott. We each wrapped the bags in gaffer's tape, yarn and shock-cording, with Judith focusing solely on the shapes that go horizontally across the top. I installed the piece in Creative Growth's gallery for a show called "Insider/Outsider", highlighting collaborations. Later the work was chosen for the Northern California Biennial at Crocker Museum in Sacramento and awarded an Honorable Mention.
I can't seem to stay away from that Creative Growth, the staff and clients alike are truly awesome.

Creative Growth is celebrating their 35th anniversary this month and has a show opening October 2 that features the early work that came out of that amazing studio. Everyone needs to see it.

One of the many wonderful donations to my Other People's Trash Archive (OPTA).

I turned magnetic recording tape edits turned into Mobius strips with thread and a lot of delicate sewing. Jason came home with miles of it after recording the phenomenal Neurosis record
"Given to the Rising" at Electrical Audio. Most recordings are done digitally now, so tape like this is becoming harder and harder to come by. What didn't make it on to the album was marked on, cut and coiled and put in a box for me to play with. My husband has wooed me with tape, shock cord and discarded wonders since 2000. Give me a tool or a box of junk over flowers anyday.

Each one of these forms is like a letter to me. Spelling out a paragraph dealing with what happens when conversations stop, communication is severed and only the imagination is generating the dialogue.

Complete necessity has prompted this first post. My old website was impossible for
techno-challenged me to update and therefore absent of my drawings, sculpture and photos for the last 4 years...really pathethic. Sorry folks. But now I have been converted to blurting all the details so... I'll slowly be adding old and new images a little at a time.
