power tools

I got a little, macho thrill when I mowed my lawn with an electric lawnmower and used a Weedwacker for the first time today. Power tools have always been a love of mine, but usually the puny, handheld variety; drills, dremmels etc. This sweat-inducing machine required the use of every one of my upper body muscles while I pushed it uphill to cut the 7 week-overgrown grass. My neighbors all but threw a party when I was done. Christmas day was the last time it was mowed, not by me but still worthy of documentation. .

Growing my own food is one of my true loves but my garden has a way of going crazy when I neglect it, like right now. When I lived in a giant, concrete box in Oakland, there was nothing to nurture besides my sculpture, drawings and photography.

In these first 5 years of living in a real house with a garden, I've fallen in love with growing organic things to eat and my studio has been a little neglected. Now that my days are spent feeding, picking up after and changing the diapers of my almost two year old son, my garden, as well as my artwork have suffered from my neglect while my delightful son thrives.

I keep reminding myself that the life of anyone creative needs to have input phases and output phases. Taking in experience and influences and later, putting out your own twisted version of these things.

A New Year

I resolve to choose my words more carefully and get out of the house more. My tendency is to hide out in my house for days at a time, and not just when the weather is bad. I also have a tendency to say more than is necessary and/or helpful. In 2010 I will be doing more getting out and shutting up.
